Ice-cream truck season is here! But before you chase down the truck and buy that sugar-on-a-stick treat, check out these recipes for healthy watermelon popsicles and slushies. Your smile will thank you for avoiding the added sugar, which can cause tooth decay and cavities.

Watermelon is a delicious fruit with nutrients that improve our oral and overall health, including vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, and vitamin A.  Low fat yogurt is a healthy source of calcium and protein.

WATERMELON POPSICLES

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups of seedless watermelon chunks
  • One low fat/fat free yogurt

You’ll also need:

  • Popsicle molds or a few ice trays
  • Blender

Directions:

  1. Cut watermelon into 1-inch cubes, add to blender
  2. Puree the watermelon chunks and yogurt
  3. Run the puree through a strainer, catching any leftover seeds and fibers
  4. Pour the juice into popsicle mold or ice tray
  5. Place in freezer until frozen.

WATERMELON SLUSHIES

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole, seedless watermelon

Directions:

  1. Cut watermelon into 1-inch cubes, add to blender
  2. Blend 6 cups of watermelon until smooth
  3. Pour into an airtight container and freeze overnight
  4. Allow to thaw until it reaches a slushie texture
  5. Scoop into cups and serve

Summer is in high gear!

Hot temps and sunshine are prime time for summer favorites, like skateboarding and swimming. 🏊‍♀️🏊‍♂️But outdoor fun can go south, especially when mouth injuries from sports occur. Besides wearing a helmet and slapping on the SPF, both adults and kids should keep their smiles safe during these summer sports and activities:

Skateboarding is one of the riskiest sports for your smile. For one, beginners risk losing control and (literally) falling on their face. And here’s one safety tip experienced skateboarders may not know: According to the ADA, mouthguards are recommended while skateboarding. Helmets can protect your head, but make a mouthguard part of your skateboarding safety routine.

Bicycling 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️is the top sports activity related to children’s dental injuries. Adults take caution too! Age and experience don’t necessarily mean you’re safe from a bike spill. As adults get older, our sense of balance becomes increasingly disrupted.

In the last 5 years have seen a big jump in trampoline injuries—increasing almost tenfold. Head and neck injuries can happen when jumpers collide or during a failed front flip. Not even a mouthguard can save you in the bounce house. Tooth loss and jaw damage are threats, but extreme cases can cause concussions or paralysis. If you must have a trampoline in your home, limit jumpers to 1 at a time, ban flips, and supervise the area at all times.
